Many thanks for your help, George,  it is a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 - 186. 

I have its manual in pDF format (I could send a copy off list if that would 
help), but it seems 
to cover a range of models and says that some of the things it describes may 
not apply to all 
models.  The term "Tecra" also occurs from time to time - I don't know what 
that is.  

As you may have seen from my reply to Chris, he thinks that I am almost there- 
but!
