Good point. It would be silly if each platform had to have its own beacon stuck to the same point of interest. Hmmm.

Interesting. So, as this report said, once a few retailers start using the
beacons, the price will come down and this will make it viable for local
authorities to buy into a VI solution. The thing that has confused me is
that the beacon reading software is already built into the iPhone, so what's
stopping the ones that the Windows mobile is being developed for being used
by the existing Apple software?

Oh, is the beacon just a radio frequency tag like you can get on clothes?

The beacon technology is not an exclusively Microsoft thing. As far as I
know, the concept of iBeacons was originally intended for IOS.
Microsoft might well be the first to demonstrate an early prototype of how
these beacons might be used for our purposes but work is ongoing elsewhere
to develop uses for this technology, primarily for push advertisements as
you pass by shops or stalls.

Once the actual beacon hardware becomes standard and mass produced, any
app
developer on any platform will be able to use them.

Yup, I think you're spot on, Steve. It was an original idea by a
Microsoft techy person to develop this, so Microsoft started the ball
rolling specifically for their Windows phone. Will they sell it to
Android and Apple or just keep it to themselves? If they keep it to
themselves, it will be dead in the water.

How cynical a lot of us are. I suppose we are just going by past
experience of good idea's getting nowhere. I do hope this will work
though.

Hi,

It's another non-standard standard. You have to have a Windows phone,
so it currently won't work on iOS or Android and I imagine it will
remain in the lab for years to come. Just my cynnical self, but we seen
all this before.
They come and they go.

All the best

Hi Barry

Yes, I heard a piece on Radio Ulster about this over breakfast this
morning.
What they didn't mention was the cost involved, both to GDBA in
partnering it, and the user. It sounded interesting though I have to
say.

Kind regards,

It's a shame it only works with the Windows mobile, but this looks
pretty good otherwise.

A headset that guides visually impaired people around cities has been
developed by Microsoft and charity Guide Dogs.
