Hi BJ.

A lot of people tend to use MP4 it provides excellent image quality and sound, and doesn't seem to compress too much. you could always try experimenting and seeing which one is best for you? also depends what programs you use to do the rip and what options you select. the higher the MBPS for example the better your quality's going to be.

Ok, so my music is currently either CD or 320kps MP3 which is the
highest quality I can get without WAV.. My movies are either watched
straight from the disk on very good headphones or watched on a HD TV
with 5.1 DTS sound. So, if I want to watch the DVDs from a file, which
would provide the best quality, MP4, MOV, FMV, AVI...? which
compresses the least? I assume that ISO is the best, so I am seeking
second best for sake of argument.

Very many thanks again!

hi andy. fair enough, i suppose i was just curious if quality does
improve as i can't really tell, but maybe as i said it depends on the
audio systems i'm using. i've never spent over the odds on one having
never had the cash to burn or seen the point.

all the best,

Hi Mo -

I think the 128 bit rate is used as a bench mark for putting music on
portable devices, from the days when capacity was more of an issue -

Hi Andy.

Yep, it may well be i'm not sure to be perfectly honest, cd rippers
i've used say that 128 K is the best quality to rip for cd's, but
they them selves could be wrong and when trying higher bitrates i
can't say i noticed a difference. then again i didn't have headphones
worth Ł200!

Hi Mo -

I thought CD quality was considerably higher than 128, more like 256
or even 320? I think stereo music radio only broadcasts in 128 -

Hi. Even when you convert to avi, the audio is generally encoded in
Ac3 format at 256 KBPS. 128KBPS is CD quality so you're already
talking HD quality ready for you to extract as MP3 at 256K or 320K
or whatever. personally i can't tell the difference beyond 128K,
maybe there's something wrong with me lol.

Hi, I see. I assume compressed AVI files are of a similar quality to
MP3 files. I was talking about uncompressed sound... WAV for example.

Hi BJ.

what do you mean by proper audio? DVD audio extractor can extract to
MP3, it depends what kind of an audio purest you are. i mean,
obviously
Wav files could take up tons of space, you have to watch out that
you
don't run out of space on your hard drive. Also, when extracting
audio
from a dvd, you have to extract audio from all the titles or at
least
play them back to make sure you're extracting the english title.
otherwise you end up with other language titles as well. choices
choices, i'm sure you'll get there in the end eventually!

Hi,

So, in my eutopian fantasy I have all my movies on one lovely hard
drive that I can plug into a media centre and watch on a decent
system. But, can you get the audio track of your choice from an ISO
file or DVD and save it as a file without loosing quality and
listen
on a portable device? sorry, rather rambling. I don't want MP3
compression, I want "proper" audio. Can this be done?

Thanks!
