Derek,

Instant messaging is a way of talking to someone, by sending and
receiving messages in real time. One of the most popular programmes for
instant messaging is Windows Messenger, often known as just Messenger.

You need to create an account, which is usually done by following a
wizard when you first use the Messenger application. Once you have an
account, the next step is to locate people you know who also use the same
programme. You find people through the email address they've registered
with.

When you have one or more contacts, you can open a message window to
them. You can then type in a message, which will immediately appear on their
screen. They can then read your message and type one back to you. The
conversation progresses along these lines.

There's a little bit more to it than that, but that's the gist. It
is possible to use instant messaging, or IM, with a dial up connection. The
difficulty is that whilst you're paying for being online by the hour, it can
be a costly form of communication.

Regards,
Léonie.

Subject: [access-uk] Instant Messaging how does it work

Hi All
I am not yet a broadband user but have a question about Instant Messaging.

Have been told that if I have broadband, I would then be able to make text
phone calls using Instant Messaging, if the other end also has broadband.

Right, so how does this work I mean lets suppose I was dealing with my
emails, or working on a word document, if someone then was to use Instant
Messaging to call me, how wold I know?
Would my phone ring? or does a message come on the computer (and so on
to a Braille display?

If message came on the Braille display I can see a problem here for Braille
users, because if one is typing, one is not reading the Braille display
all the time.

Regads, Derek
