You very defintely do not need a broadband connection in order to do text messaging. text messaging predates the www; Internet Relay Chat (or IRC for short)was around when today's dialup modems would have been considered lightening fast. Only very small amounts of data are transferred when you send text messages. So you are ready for your first experiments and adventures in instant mesaging now. just sign up to one or more services that your friends communicate on and you are good to go.

This said, many instant messaging systems these days also have voice chat options and if and how well you can use voice over a dialup connection depends a lot on the the particular Messenger being used and on the quality of your dialup connection. For example, Skype, which is primarily a Internet Telephony program but also offers text chat, is recommended for a broadband conection for its voice chat. Of course, you can send text mesages on skype over dialup and if you are lucky and have a decent dialup connection, might also be able to do voice with acceptable quality.

Good luck and have fun!

Hi All
I am not yet a broadband user but have a question about Instant Messaging.

Have been told that if I have broadband, I would then be able to make text
phone calls using Instant Messaging, if the other end also has broadband.

Right, so how does this work I mean lets suppose I was dealing with my
emails, or working on a word document, if someone then was to
use Instant Messaging to call me, how wold I know?
Would my phone ring? or does a message come on the computer (and so
on to a Braille display?

If message came on the Braille display I can see a problem here for Braille
users, because if one is typing, one is not reading the Braille display
all
the time.
