If only it was that.  Yup, it was the first thing I tried.  Thanks anyway.
Vodafone are changing the phone today with no quibbles.  That's a bit
worrying.  If it was a solid machine that rarely went wrong, wouldn't they
be more reluctant to change it?

Hi Barry, I know it's simple and unlikely but have you checked that the
volume is up?Might be worth just using the buttons to try and increase it or
swipe upwards to do the same? Think this has happened to someone else and
this was the issue. Take care!
