Almost all of the email headers are forgeable, that is to say the information in them is not reliable to trace the source of the spam. You can track back the I/P addresses if you know what you are doing that may not necessarily tell you that much. The present system of email does not have a security model built into it and until we have something like email that does this is still going to be a very significant problem. Most spamming these days is a highly sophisticated business and conducted not so much by humans typeing emails or even just bulk sending them but using bots (automiated bits of code) that are sitting on some people's PC busily sending out this rubbish. Quite a lot of the bot infested PCs live in the far east and Eastern Europe where software piracy and the measures against it have left us with systems that are not patched and therefore allow botnets to be maintained more easily. However even in the west where patched systems are rather more common the spammers and criminals are become more and more clever at getting malware onto your PC, first it was via the illegal file sharing networks, then cracks and serial number websites and porn sites. Kits are now widely available for people to set up websites designed specifically to dump malware onto your PCs in order to facilitate acts of fraud or nuisance spamming etc. There is very little you can do about it. especially once the spam lands on your PC if your ISP does not have adequate spam filtering measures at the ISP end. The advice to get a Googlemail address is not at all bad since the spam filtering is very good and you have the advantage that should you move ISP later on you keep your email address. I may not use the same ISP if or when I move but being able to keep the email address constant is once less thing to worry about. Regards. Can anyone give me any idea as to how I might go about finding out how come I'm receiving spam mail with my e-mail address as the sender? Or is this just a case of tough? luck? I'd really love to know who's responsible for this, if for no other reason than to let me vent my spleen! Regards.
