Hi Tony,
No setting up of Alexa is needed; as soon as you plug the Dot in and it starts,
she begins talking.
The website or app allow you to then make changes to how the Dot works. For
instance by default when I say "Alexa", there is a brief pause before the ring
on the top of the unit turns blue to indicate it's ready to receive a request.
I've set it so that there is a sound as well. There are other settings you
might want to change, or you might want some idea of things you can say to the
Dot or how to phrase requests, or to install the skills like the Radio Player
that Jackie mentioned, which can make the Dot more useful to you.

I've only tried my Dot once away from home, on a public Wi-Fi system, and I
couldn't connect to it. I was in a rush so maybe I was doing it wrong.
Alexa is built into the Dot. The whole point is there is no screen, so Alexa
is the way the Dot communicates with you.
The Dot comes with TuneIn radio. I don't know how many stations that gives
you access to, but their website, http://tunein.com/, should tell you.

Thanks for the interesting and sometimes even amusing LOL posts here recently.
I don't have a smart phone but only a laptop and a netbook so I wonder are
the Echo and Dot usable with them?
I wonder also as I have mobile broadband does the Echo/Dot work anywhere as
long as I have my wi Fi enabledor say if out and about using other Wi FI?
Finally do I need to download Alexa or is it there by default and using the
Echo or Dot have I then accessx to internet radio?
