Yes, there are lots of Skills you can activate for learning in addition to
the funny stuff.
I haven't signed up for the Prime Unlimited streaming service because I am
just trying to see what she knows within Prime Music first. I have noticed
that she plays a lot of album versions of tracks which is fine if you like
them. Bridget tried asking her to play He Ain't Heavy by the Hollies, but
she instead came up with the same song by some orchestra. Nice, but not
what she was asked! (smile.)
You can also ask her if you have any packages due for delivery, and if you
have ordered them through Amazon, she gives the date you placed the order,
and the expected date for delivery.

I must say that the Echo or Dot is great if you have visitors. We had
Martin's sister Bridget round last night, and their brother's partner,
Sonia. I brought Alexa down from upstairs and just asked her a question.
The reaction from Bridget was hilarious as neither she nor Sonia are
technical at all. While they have seen TV adverts, they were quite
impressed with the Dot in the flesh, so to speak. We asked her routine
stuff like weather forecasts, the time, some world facts, but the funniest
thing had to be asking her to tell jokes! Really good fun!
Now I have it up and running without using the awful app, I'm a total
convert! (smile.)

The beauty of the Dot is that it has a 3.5mm socket in which you can
plug a lead to use on a hifi or similar system. So far, I haven't
done this as I have put the Dot in our bedroom. In fact, I set an
alarm for 6.30 every day so Alexa can wake me up if my dog doesn't!
There is a serious side to using the Echo or Dot in addition to the
fun once you grapple with the app, or better still, use the website.
I agree the Dot doesn't have the depth that the Echo does in terms of
sound, but its price for me is more sensible, and it does offer that
option to plug it into another sound system.
There are plenty of Echo or Dot owners on here if you decide to
purchase one and get stuck. But it is pretty self-explanatory. I
didn't get off to a good start when I purchased the Echo as the app
drove me mad, and I sent it back. But now I have opened a lot of the
Skills, and steer clear of the app, I like it much more.

I'm interested in you getting the Dot as I too may go that way,
hooking it up to my home speakers.
"setting up Alexa" you say so do you need to do much for setting up
the basics or is that basic a default?
I may purchase the Dot before the end of year and in time perhaps get
a mobile version too, but maybe not rush in.
I assume those devices have USB ports as I don't think my computers
have bluetooth.
