Hi Jeff,

If you get it from somewhere like Amazon or one of the main retailers it
will cost you at least £150. However, there are some on Ebay for much less,
just search for Olympus DM5 and see what comes up.

John.

Hi Jeff

The only warning I would issue regarding RNIB recorders is the 12-minute
one
which, in our view, is really crap to put it bluntly. It's plastic,
doesn't
really let a blind person know they are recording when on the phone, for
example, and is something more akin to a cheap Christmas cracker. Sorry
but
I'm being brutally honest. We got one just to have by the phone instead
of
running around looking for one of our players if caught out, and we sent
it
back because it was so awful. A big thumbs down from us for this one.
Can't remember the product code for it, but I think they are about £18.50
each.

The DM5 is a nice machine and, if you want to eventually put music on it
or
listen to a book, then it is a good choice. But, as others have said, you
can get something relatively cheap just for recording notes. If you
encounter difficulties with the Internet and faffing about with websites,
I
would be willing to look for you and report off list if that helps?

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

There is also a memo facility on most mobile phones and indeed the RNIB
do

a variety of small recorders for simply quick messages, telephone numbers
or short reminders

Jeff, much as I like the DM5 type recorders, I would say it would be a
bit like overkill to use one just for short messages which you may need
to record in a hurry, at work.

I used to be a telephonist, and used a hand held tape machine for this.
Old technology I know, which may be ridiculed by some. But I still have
such a device, made by Olympus as it happens, which I still use for
phone

numbers, short messages etc. I think you could probably get something
like this from Argos, for example, for a much lower price than the range
of Olympus digital recorders.

Just my opinion of course, but you might consider it before paying more
than you need.

Cheers, Ted.

Hi Guys,
I have been looking for a simple, discrete, recorder for work.

Would you recommend this?
In my former life, before losing my sight, I was a cameraman, and I
swear I had less equipment than now, losing sight makes life
complicated, but you do meet some really nice people.

Hi Ted, there's no difference in recording quality between a card and internal memory, a card just gives you extra capacity. I don't have a 550, but the DM5 will take up to a 32 gig SDHC. I have a 32 gig class
10
in mine and it's fine with it.

John,
I have had a DM550 for a little while, so far have only used the
internal memory for recording. What would you say is the advantage
of
an SD card? I'm guessing it would have greater capacity, but how
does
it compare in terms of recording quality, or ease of use, or
anything
else?

TIA, Ted.

Hi Brian, you can copy and paste. You don't need to use the
software
to transfer. Just remember that if you've got a card in the DM5 the
card will come up in windows explorer as removable disk and the
internal memory will come up as dm5.
John.
