One of the problems with extreme moderation is that discussion often
descends into an echo chamber effect. I am not a contributing member here
to any useful extent, so banning me would have no effect on the group.
Henry's are clearly positive, and Craig is negative. The problems come in
the gray areas. Your Covid example is one of these in which there are both
deniers and panic mongers on the extreme ends, neither of which are useful
positions. There is no problem so bad that it cannot be made worse by
stupid actions. These actions are most often at the extreme ends of the
spectrum when there is little to no dissent allowed, and many reach the
conclusion that there is only one true way.

A lot of groups desperately want to have a free-speech low moderation
policy because it sounds good on paper, and makes them feel like they are
doing the Right Thing. But the problem is that not all speech is *good
*speech.
Some people have convinced themselves that exercising the tiniest bit of
judgment about what is germane to a given group, immediately makes you an
orwellian villain. Meanwhile, the bad speech drives out the good, and all
the people who used to like it in that community leave.
The most successful, 25 year old online community that I am part of has a
hyperactive moderation group, and bans and probations are handed out dozens
of times per day. Because of that, the community is relatively fun to
participate in.
Another community that I am part of is disintegrating over the COVID
thing. COVID deniers and anti-maskers are taking over, and the free-speech
fundamentalist mods and admins are wringing their hands about if and when
we can censor their speech. I'm an admin, and I started to delete insane
COVID-denial Qanon BS. This got me called "Pathetic" by the billionaire CEO
of some hot new defense startup.
Look, Craig should have been banned a long time ago. I think I was the one
who got him to shut up last year.
If there are mods or admins, can we please permaban Craig? Or can we all
just pool our money and buy him L2 access at nasaspaceflight?

I know, I can always delete posts. But each such post is an annoyance,
especially when the poster is a fanatic by Churchill's quote. And with
everything going on in the US right now, I certainly don't need any
annoyance in my life.(rather
I'll miss hearing about real rocketry from people who do real rocketry
than those who pretend). But the annoyance factor has finallyovershadowed
the utility -- at least for me; I don't know about anyone else.
