Maybe you can practice with LNG, orders of mag cheaper and easier to handle
and pretty light,only ~4lb/gal.
Many years ago, a group of my friends filled perhaps 700 feet of dry
cleaner bag with natural gas and added an ignition package.
Alas, it was a failure due to someone setting the roll of bag material
on the ground which punched enough holes that the gas leaked out and
there was not enough to burn at the lower end where the ignitor was.
If you want to make an impressive flash and an earth-shaking boom, you
might consider acetylene and oxygen. Perhaps a bit rich on acetylene
to get a white flash from the extra carbon. A trash bag full of the
stuff is up in the range of a couple of sticks of 40% dynamite, and
from what I have heard, an 8-foot weather balloon is in the range of a
whole box. For fireworks, you could use natural gas balloons to get
it up high.
I know of only one person who tried filling a trash bag. He woke up
in the hospital but since he was a particularly persistent person, did
it again with enough protective gear to see that happened. The trash
bag generated a tiny spark as it was being pulled apart.
If I were going to do this, I would wipe the inside of the trash bag
with a damp cloth *and* fill it remotely. The most I tried was a
sandwich bag. That made a bang on a par with a cherry bomb.
