It's been possible in principle for a long time -- satellite people were
looking at it even before the LEO comsats started launching -- but usable
hardware that you can actually *buy* (rather than having to develop it
yourself, including negotiating technical details with the comsat people)
is a fairly recent development. Currently, data rates are low and there
are other limitations, and it's all very new and details are still in
flux, but reportedly it does work.
The advantage is that the network is already there, with pretty much
global coverage, and it's set up to serve large numbers of simultaneous
users. The disadvantage is that you have to pay to use it. :-)
