I just tossed that suggestion out there as an option if it made sense for
your system. As that would be about the smallest change possible for a
potentially workable solution.
Since you are just a single shot actuation, a pyro valve would be pretty
reasonable. If you have the budget for it, there are some ready made pyro
valves for these sorts of applications that get flown pretty frequently. I
can't remember the name of the company off the top of my head. But that
would be the most sure-fire solution.
Otherwise you can convert a ball valve to a pyro valve with a bracket, and
a small pneumatic cylinder. You can use smokeless powder like red-dot or
pyrodex inside the pneumatic cylinder and just JB weld the powder/ignitor
in. I did pyro actuated pneumatic pistons like this on a 150k shot I did a
few years ago. Just have the cylinder mounted to a bracket and a probably
shortened standard valve arm.
It will take a bit of testing to get it working exactly right for powder
amounts and actuator mounting, and the cylinders are pretty much single use
unless you are serious about cleaning them afterwards. But you should be
able to do it for less than $100 parts cost. Some masking tape or a nylon
shear pin would be a good idea to make sure the valve is held closed for
getting jostled around till you need it.
