Subject: Re: [etni] Fw: magen grade
I am surprised that so little is being said about the sad issue of the "magen grades" in English.
English is the only subject in which the students are not examined in the Bagrut Exams on what they are taught by their teachers.
Dr.Judy Steiner sent out letters to the school principals in which she informs both them and their teachers how they are supposed to calculate their school grades. This letter states that the weight of literature is 30% of the grades for Module E and F …
This means that students will get on their Bagrut Exams much higher grades than they will get from their teachers as school grades (magen)
This means that instead of helping our students get high grades in English, we are lowering their final grades in English.
This means that an "external student" has better chances of getting better grades because he will be assessed only according to his performance on the Bagrut Exam.
This means that any students with a grain of brain will understand that he is better off without a "Ziun Shnati" Or "Ziun Magen" because by definition these grades have to be lower than what he will get in the exams.
This means that it is advisable for a students to sit for external exams which means less jobs for us as English Teachers.
But we are sitting idle or post messages to Etni rather than raise our voices in protest to whoever can change this.

I wanted to know if there's an official answer to this one:
The magen grade a student gets, does it mainly reflect what I think the student will get on the bagrut itself? (including obviously the project/literature-bookreports)
I don't think so and feel that attendance, classwork etc... should get some % too.
I had a parent on the phone who very stronlgy disagreed with me that what I gave as a magen wasn't fair to the student.
I calculated test etc..., the project and "class behavior" too. Whatever the grade was, I gave.
Is there anything written (officially) on this issue?
