This means that students will get on their Bagrut Exams much higher
grades than they will get from their teachers as school grades (magen)

This means that instead of helping our students get high grades in
English, we are lowering their final grades in English. <SNIP>

Why do you say that? I find that the literature and book reports bring up my students' magen / shnati grades. But maybe that's because they actually do the literature tasks and book reports. Those that don't - I have absolutely no pity for and lower their grades mercilessly (and make sure all the other teachers do the same). Maybe that's why there are no games in our school - students know that they had better do the work or they will be heavily penalized.

OK, I admit that I am lucky enough to have a principal who backs me 100% (Are you reading this, Lev?). Not only does she not put pressure on us to doctor grades, she's actually happy to see (some) low grades, because she wants the current situation (in which kids know that there are consequences to their actions) to continue.

And to answer Sonja's question - even though it's a bit late by now - 70% of the tziyun shnati is supposed to be comprised of classwork, homework, tests, etc. - in other words, not only tests.

Not to open up a can of worms here on ETNI, but I wonder how many teachers around the country actually give tziyunim shnati'im according to Dr. Steiner's directives? I'd be surprised if it was even 20%. Just last week I was speaking to a friend about the grades she was giving for the winter Bagrut. Not only was no one in her entire school (and this is a big school) aware of the fact that the tziyun shnati is not meant to be made up only of Matkonet marks, she wouldn't have been able to follow the directives in any case since no one there bothers to teach literature or make the students do extensive reading. Somehow I have the feeling that we teachers who do our best to give Magen grades honestly and with professional integrity are in the minority.

All the best,
Rivka
