Here's the thing: yes, the speech is the same, since Apple now lets apps speak with iOS voices. However, it is not actually Voiceover doing the speaking. The consequences of this are most felt by those with braille: there is still no way to use an app like Blindsquare with the phone locked and while using a braille display. Technically, the only thing iOS7 lets apps do now is send text to a synthesizer, it has nothing to do with Voiceover itself. So, while it does sound like Voiceover, it isn't. Again, the main drawback is lack of braille support. On Nov 22, 2013, at 9:05 AM, Ilkka Pirttimaa <<mailto:ilkka.pirttimaa@xxxxxxxxx>ilkka.pirttimaa@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:

Hello Kawal, you asked me to join the discussion so here I am :-)

Yes, Apple opened SDK to produce speech on iOS7. Since I have BlindSquare users who has also iOS5 or iOS6 and I also support languages that Apple doesn't have, I have support both for iOS voices and Acapela. So, even iOS7 users can still use Acapela voices if they prefer to do so.

This indeed would allow Seeing Eye to implement background operation on iOS7 devices. There is also another way to do it even with iOS5 and iOS6 by sending local notifications. Since voiceover reads push notifications, also local apps can cause phone to speak those. I have seen some apps doing that, but user experience is much worse than having an app that has full control what is spoken and when.

This is confirmed in what's new if you look in your updated App list in the App Store if you have Blind Square installed. I know the dchveloper is on this list and no doubt he will write and confirm. So I'm afraid Chris Sendero theeeing I app will have to follow suit!

Technically it isn't VoiceOver thats speaking using Blindsquare, they are generating their own tts messages and have been doing so for a long time.

Hello.

Whilst I'm waiting forthe Seeing I App to come out in the UK, I am having to use Blind Square. So today, I discovered that Voice Over was speaking automatically withthe screen locked. So I am really hoping that by the time I get The Seeing I app, one can lock the screen andthe Seeing I app can announce things with the screen locked and thus saving battery life.

Kawal.
