I understand that some changes had to be made. However, I think one solution
would be to have a free and a subscription level. One thing I would like to see
by subscription would be the return of Google Maps.

Mike,
Frankly, I am appalled that you, a GPS long-time user and evangelist, would
even begin to praise what GoodMaps is or does. The outdoor navigation side of
the app is shockingly bad and lacks many features both on iOS and Android. It
isn't even close to what NE was, and anyone who did use NE or even the Trekker
product would agree if they did anything other than walk outside to their
mailbox, and maybe even then, too. By the way, I did reach out to GoodMaps. I
requested a sit-down on a podcast which reaches over 3,000 plays monthly. I
provided lots of feedback. I requested the ability to test beta versions and
provide additional feedback that way. And, like Gary, I would have to say that
the feedback has fallen on Deaf ears.
As for the map provider not being available, I think this is a Red herring.
Isn't that exactly what the NE Online version set out to provide? In fact, the
original NE did provide alternate map sources.
I believe strongly that this was purely a monetary decision, which makes me
less likely to trust APH and GoodMaps moving forward, even if the product was
made into an excellent navigational aid, which at this point, isn't likely any
time soon. There is quite a bit of money to be had to improve in-door
navigation, and even though most users aren't impacted in any way by a few
buildings here and there in one or two cities being lit up with in-door
support, the money is there, whereas there probably isn't as much to be had for
the outdoor space. NE provided features that no other app can touch, and
instead of listening to the outcry from so many users that I know provided
feedback, this decision was made without regard to those customers who did pay
for the app and who probably would continue paying for the app in the form of a
subscription if it were continued and maintained, even at a basic level, as, in
the outdoor space, nothing else touched NE. Instead, the decision was made, and
the product killed off, with a new one spun up that is, frankly, garbage in
pretty much every imaginable way, outdoors at least, and as I said above, the
indoor space is irrelevant for most people as it simply does not scale in any
meaningful way, and it still doesn't provide product accessibility within the
indoor space. And, instead of simply leaving the app up on the app store,
something which probably doesn't take that much effort to do, and stating that
support is no longer being offered, it was pulled from the app stores. Now why
would that be the case?
Frankly, Mike, I think that you should be more honest with the users, and you
should not continue to parrot the same babble and garbage that is simply
factually untrue, as we both know. Admit that this was a financial decision,
and move on. Users might appreciate the transparency a bit more than hearing
that the cause is because of map providers. Lazarillo shits all over GoodMaps
and will likely continue to do so as long as GM continues on its current
trajectory, and it is nowhere near as good as NE was.
I do hope that, for iPhone users, NE continues to exist in your purchase
history so that you can download it after a reinstall if you had purchased it.
The Android version at least is continuing to work, for now, and as long as it
does, I will continue to use it in the absence of an alternative.

Nearby users, as you may have heard, there were things thing under the hood
that necessitated a complete revamping of the program. Software is made up of
licensed modules and the map engine many of us used in our products over the
years was discontinued. You may have noticed that HumanWare changed Trekker to
Here Maps related to this same issue.
Certainly use what you are familiar with and like. It would be helpful to
submit feature requests to Support@xxxxxxxxxxxx <mailto:Support@xxxxxxxxxxxx>
so your favorite features can find their way into GoodMaps Explore.
Thanks,
Mike
