Hmm, so how can you find the pilot to ask?

I find that it is pilot dependent, not airline specific. I have gotten
permission on American and a couple other airlines. It is at the pilot's
discretion. You will have much less success with the flight attendant.
They can only follow the official policy, which says that you can't use
it other than on Southwest.

Peter, you won't get satellites from an isle seat through a one foot
window 4 feet away.

If you do get permission, the holux fits nicely behind the window shade.
You could sit in the isle seat and get GPS if the window passenger
doesn't mind putting the shade down.
