As most of the people here know (I guess so), Free Software world is no more
lacking a social networking software. GNU Social[1] is one such developed
under GNU by FSF, using PHP5. Diaspora [2] is another such thing using Ruby.
Both of these allow private hosting which implies very high security (Please
correct me if I'm wrong).
Rather than reinventing the wheel you can contribute to any of these Free
Software, IMHO.
