[Ilugc] CPUs (Was: Linux powers the Sub-Rs10k PC)

I had an old compaq machine with a Cyrix MediaGX processorwith a rating
of 133MHz, but actually ran at 100MHz or 90MHzor something - performance
wasn't very good though...
The MediaGX was from National Semiconductor (see above), and was an
embedded x86 CPU, meant for set-top boxes, routers and the like. It was
never meant to be a desktop CPU, though that did not prevent some companies
from building low-end consumer desktops around it. These were mostly destined
for price-sensitive markets, and they were never meant to compete on
performance.
The machine was a Compaq Presario 2100, if I am not mistaken, and was
one of the lowest priced branded solutions at that time(approx 7 or 8
years ago) - it had pretty much everything integrated into the mobo. I
bought it for approximately 65 to 70k just as it came out - which
turned out to be a bad decision, since a few months later a faster
version - 233MHz came out at a price of around 58k! If I had know
anything much about computers, I would've stayed away from both
these... I had lotsa problems trying to linux working on these
computers, partly b'cos of the weird hardware and partly b'cos of my
inexperience...
I think perhaps the FPU wasn't very good, and it didnt have as much as
L2 cache as a 100/133 MHz Intel Pentium. Trying to run Quake (1) did
not give very good performance when even compared to a 100MHz pentium.
Though otherwise the machine was stable and good as long as u didnt
push it too hard (running games and stuff) - in fact it was in running
condition until 2 months ago - running an age old flaky installation
of windows 95 in my dad's office...
