Which motherboard would you recommend to go with
VIA C3/733 MHz to get the best performance ? Currently,
I have an ASUS CUSI-FX board (SIS 630e chipset) and I find
it too slow for desktop usage when compared to my Compaq
Deskpro 4000 series (Pentium II/233 MHz machines).
I've used a Biostar M6VLA (Via PLE133 with integrated
Trident Blade graphics) with good results, but not for gaming.
This is a relatively inexpensive low-end board that's widely
available locally. It is excellent for day-to-day desktop use
and is rock stable with Redhat 7.3, and I've built two boxes
with this combo (one for a friend, and one for myself). It's
possible to build a fanless box with this combo if you use a
heavy Thermaltake heatsink and/or underclock it to 100 FSB.
However, it lacks an AGP slot, so you'll have to use a PCI
graphics accelerator if you want to try it out for gaming. I
believe that there's some supply of GeForce2 MX boards
for about Rs.1250 available, but YMMV.
The other alternative is to use a Shuttle FV24/FV25 in
a small form-factor (SFF) box like the Shuttle SV-24. These
are not available locally, but it's one of the smallest
footprint full-featured x86 boxes ever built.
