You can also try
dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg
This will allow to access to a few more configuration variables.
Note that more recent (squeeze?) xserver-xorg setups use _no_
configuration file by default (which is not without controversy as you
can imagine!). This is because the xserver queries the hardware and
sets up things automatically.
So if you have a specific configuration file that you like then you
should make a copy of it and use it. Note also that Debian generally
keeps a backup of your configuration files in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.<date>
If an older configuration file worked better for you then you can use
that. Of course, this only applies is you upgrade --- motto is
"upgrade, do re-install".
