I guess, the problem is with the classification of UNIX as free and
commercial. For eg, there are features in Solaris(or rather, Open
Solaris, now called Open Indiana) that aren't yet production ready on
GNU/Linux world. One such example is DTrace. ZFS is now available, I
guess. Their concept of zones is excellent.
But free UNIX OSes have caught up with the latest innovation and they
are quite advanced.
There is no concept of distros or distributions in the UNIX world.
In the Open Solaris/Open Indiana world, we have the concept of
"distros". BeleniX, SchilliX, Nexenta, and Open Indiana itself are
various distros. They all use the illumos kernel, and then use various
solaris user land applications. Various packages are available as
well. In fact, in their recent build(151a), installing a package is
extremely user friendly. They have a synaptic like UI where you can
search and click and install stuff.
In the Windows world if you wish to use UNIX commands then there are a
few choices today.
MingW and Cygwin are the most prominent.
Another such windows port is UWIN from the AT&T software labs. Thanks
