My knowledge as is everyone's knowledge is gained by each battle won
inch by inch.
This process takes years. Do you think a single Google search will
tell you everything? No.
Okay now for the answers.
Steep learning curve?
Well yes. Definitely.
UNIX is serious business. I am not talking from a commerce angle. It
is serious learning. It is
the kind of knowledge that gets serious work done.
Linux has some seriousness too as it is used in many places but it is
a good mix today.
I can say perhaps 50 50.
It is good to know that Linux is not the world. People think Windows
and Linux are the only OSes.
What about Mac? And what about mainframe eh? ;)
Anyway it is not bash. You are wrong there.
Bash is frowned upon by the UNIX community. It is full of bugs,
bloated and acts crazy.
ksh is the preferred shell. The binutils in UNIX is different from
that of Linux. You don't have so
many switches, so many colors.
It is overall much more mature and serious.
The file systems; that is where the major difference lies.
Linux has 100 ways to do each thing. Everyone wants a gratification of
their ego.
That is not how UNIX works.
Primarily UNIX means base install has gcc,make and ssh and also comes
with web and ftp servers.
Commercial interests like Redhat came long and blew such ideas to bits.
I can go on and on but the reality is that 99.9999999999999% of LUG is
still stuck in the Linux mud.
And my effort to raise people from that is not helping, has not
helped, and I don't think really
serious hackers hang around in LUG at all....
