Bash might have a few issues, but in my opinion, a few things
are easier in bash :)
ksh is the preferred shell. The binutils in UNIX is different from
that of Linux. You don't have so
many switches, so many colors.
Well, the binutils is mostly from GNU, and on Solaris(Open
Indiana, to be correct), we can use all of those binutils. It has the
gmake, gawk etc. I am not sure about *BSD, but I guess that too would
have the GNU collection in its ports. The biggest difference is the
switches. For eg.
cp a/ /data/a -r
will work in a GNU system. The '-r' switch is at the end. But by
default, the switches have to be right after the command in a proper
UNIX system. I don't know if there is an easy way to make the commands
parse the switches irrespective of their position in the command.
It is overall much more mature and serious.
The file systems; that is where the major difference lies.
I am not sure I understood this. Can you please tell what is the
difference in the file systems ? UNIX supports the UFS, ZFS etc.
Linux has 100 ways to do each thing. Everyone wants a gratification of
their ego.
It is not about ego. It is about having options. The
classical example - Emacs and Vi. I might like emacs and someone else
will like vi. We can choose the editor that best suits our needs.
I can go on and on but the reality is that 99.9999999999999% of LUG is
still stuck in the Linux mud.
That's because this is a LUG, a Linux User Group. So, people
tend to use GNU/Linux :). But on a serious note, for a desktop user,
who primary use of a computer is to check mails, create some
documents, spreadsheets and presentations, listen to music and watch
movies, UNIX(say, FreeBSD) is not very suitable. But on a server, yes,
it makes more sense to use UNIX.
And my effort to raise people from that is not helping, has not
helped, and I don't think really
serious hackers hang around in LUG at all....
Yes, they tend to hang around in IRCs of their choice, where
they most probably get their answers much faster, and with lesser
noise :) LUGs are mostly for users with user land questions. Thanks
