[Ilugc] FOSS Lab Setup in Lord Venkateshwaraa Engineering College, Kanchipuram Dt.

Dear all,

I appreciate and my best wishes for the support of rasigar mannaram.

Every man entitles to have his own fancies.
Request to leave (atleast some) room in this mailing list  for cynics of
the
foss lab server (in the context of foss lab server in engg college).


As I found my FOSS lab setup (note, the context is not about our FOSS lab
server but the FOSS labs we are establishing in Engg. colleges) announcement
seems to create noise for few people in the list, I have decided to stop by
postings here and continue to post them in my fosslab list.

Some stats about the FOSS lab setups we have done so far:

1. Starting from April 21 '2011 to July 22' 2011 we have setup FOSS labs in
82 engineering colleges (and about to reach 130+ before August)

2. About 10,000+ students getting benefited by this effort. (almost many
students have done compilation of Linux kernel from source and have
successfully booted from them)

3. Almost many engineering colleges have temporarily stopped their purchase
of Proprietary software recommended by University and started evaluating
FOSS alternatives.

4. From the next academic year, many engineering colleges would start
teaching FOSS right from the first year (OpenOffice / GCC / Shell
Programminig and no more Turbo C / M$ Office).

5.  I can confidently say that the proprietary software domination in our
engineering education is seeing its end (especially in Tamilnadu).
