Hi,

How does teaching installation "alone" help in understanding
various aspects of the "trade". I don't really understand what 'trade'
in this context means.

In my experience with students, teaching installation is the first step of
exploring foss.

But I don't see how not knowing the installation of GNU/Linux or a
specific tool will prevent a person
from using it well.

Self starters may find it easier to start from any point, but finger holding
students are those who need systematic way of imparting of technology. In my
experience I found the later kind of pupils are more at  private engineering
colleges in tamilnadu (samples from where i visited) .
