I am running Fedora 9, and it doesn't appear to have a service called xfs,
so I'm assuming it is not present in the recent versions.
As for system-config-display --reconfigure, that is needed only when X stops
working right? In my case, gdm didn't start automatically, but when I type
# gdm
X does start, and it shows the graphical login screen and I am able to
login. But after logging, the panels and processes that show icons on the
desktop and probably others that display windows are not starting. So I have
a graphical screen displaying just the wall paper, where mouse clicks don't
work.
Would it be wise to find out the names of these processes and starting them
before I start gdm from the console?
If not then something may suspect in your system. Are you running
tripwire or aide to compare your file finger prints with the base you
had installed?
Nope. I didn't install any new software except the webserver and the db
engine. And that can't have caused any trouble, as I have restarted the
machine several times after installing these.
