I think buying a thinkpad in either place ..more or less costs you the same.
Most R series are priced at around 2500+ SGD(with tax). Considering the
travel charges it'll turnout to be 75K+ INR.(65K INR +10K INR(to and fro)).
For the same price you can get a R series thinkpad in India.(almost same
configuration)
For Eg,
1) R61 89422A costs SGD 2478(with tax). .

Both have kind of same configuration.
IMO, Getting a thinkpad in US would be the best option.(Like if you know
someone
who could offer to carry a laptop for you when they come to india). It costs
around 30-35%
cheaper than India/SG and only in the US you can order a personally
customized laptop
suiting your needs.
If you know a IBM/Lenovo employee and if he is willing to get a laptop for
you, you get another
10% discount(not sure if this applicable in India...).
Let us hope lenovo offers things like personal cutomizations of
configurations, linux loaded laptops
etc.... in the near future for countries like India also.
