how about international warranties ? Do IBM/Lenovo in India honour

Sure do - as long as the laptop includes IWS (International Warranty
Support).
There's a query page on lenovo.com you can access to find which countries
offer support for your model of laptop (enter the first 4 digits of your
laptop's model number - for example my X60s is an 1705CTO, so I would enter
1705).
Warning - not all laptop models (like, some of the brand new T or X 61
series) may have support in India till some months after their release.
That was the reason why I bought an X60s instead of an X61s in July, on a
trip to DC [had a friend buy it and keep it for me ..].
I have used the Indian helpdesk once in a while - and they do provide
support, but if it is anything complex you just might want a second opinion
from the Lenovo 1-800 number which is staffed by techs in Atlanta. They
tend to be a lot more experienced at fixing stuff over the phone than the
Lenovo India techs (working out of Bangalore) are, in my limited experience.
I have had to call two or three times after a buggy release of thinkpad's
power manager started popping up bogus "battery errors" on my laptop - found
the ATL staff far more clueful than BLR, plus ATL is available 24x7, and
1800 numbers are free to call using skype.
I guess after this experience I now know just why so many US types are
moaning about poor customer support when outsourced to India .. because it
IS poor, beyond a certain basic level of support / answering FAQ type
questions. This is speaking as someone who has run customer support and
antispam support desks for the last 10 years now .. mostly in India, for
foreign customers.
