It is a fact , not an opinion that KDE squeezes system resources much more than
you can imagine. In fact even a simple kdict uses the same set of libraries
that kstar and other utilies use and it takes a long time to load and work. It
has nice eye candy, cutting edge features, special effects, especialy good
integration with sound etc.
GNOME is not without its rough edges. Interface is boring and badly designed
and lot of crashes and other problems.
However coming to the point, GNOME is at least 10 times faster than KDE and
runs very well on old machines, that is all.
