I had a slackware based box running on PIII processor with 64MB Ram.
You can try Vector Linux ( which is actually based on Slackware ).
Slackware has 'slapt-get' which is similar to apt-get for package
management.
Window manager is Xfce and word processor is Abi-Word.

Duh, not a GNOME vs KDE flame again, we have had enough.
IMHO, the preference of desktop is individual's choice and I have seen
both of them work well for an average joe's requirements. I personally
(though have been using GNOME since I first installed GNU/Linux) never
subscribe any particular desktop, just tell people what are all
available and how each one looks. Then, I leave the decision to them.
I hate both equally so I am not partial :-)
