As you see above, "at+crm=1" is the magic word for LG phones. Just
find out if the model that you are looking at can work with
at+crm=1. Also note that, for some weird reason, these phones end
up dialing #777 or whatever no matter what is the number you specify
in your dialing software. So that means you cannot use another dialup
ISP. I use an indicom connection (which I will soon ditch) in favour
of the BSNL broadband.

The same goes with even "city-boys" like me who dont exactly stay at
the heart of the city. Most ISPs just say "sorry sir, your area is not
yet 'wired' by us".
