Firstly, thanks AE dept for running this listserv. Though I wish it was CS
that took initiative. I am CS alumnus. :-)
I am trying to buy a reliance cell phone for my parents that I could use
to connect to internet. Can someone suggest what is a good reliance cell
phone for Linux? I was thinking of buying LG RD 5130. But I am not sure
that it supports Linux. The Linux driver etc on the webpage has
directories only for the following phones:
GTRAN_GCP_4020 LG_LST_250 LG_RD_2230 SAMSUNG_SCH_A603
KYOCERA_7135 LG_RD_2030 LG_RD_7130 SAMSUNG_SCH_A663
LG_LSP_-340E LG_RD_2130 SAMSUNG_SCH_A563 SAMSUNG_SCH_N191
So I am wondering if Reliance cell phone internet works only on above
phones. Can someone suggest me a good cell phone with speaker phone that
works in Linux for Internet.

Now, reliance advertises that the phone can support upto 144Kbps. (I
suppose this is bits and not bytes per second). Can someone tell me why
the two numbers (144Kbps and 115200) can differ? Also, is there a way I
can get faster Internet on a diff phone on Reliance? I would be willing to
pay money to get good internet in my small town.
What are the options to get on Internet for a small town guy?

I really think that the govt should allow any company to use BSNL's
last mile infratructure. After all, BSNL is owned by the govt and is built
out of tax payers' money. It is unreasonable to expect someone to lay new
wires in small towns/rural areas. Me town boy will have to wait long for
internet. So no competetion in rural areas/small towns to BSNL. Which
means that we (small town people) will have to live with the lousy BSNL
for ages. My father is the boss of the BSNL phone exchange at my small
town. And I am still having trouble to get onto internet reliably. What
about others?
India has a lot to learn from South Korea. On another note, broadband
definition in India is 256Kbps. In London, firms get sued because they
are advertising 512Kbps as broadband. We have a long way to go! Atleast,
we are running. Nice to see that.
