modem which is provided by airtel. As you know all this ISPs are
wicked in not providing support like device drivers for their modem in
linux environment.
I have the same usb modem, and I use the eciadsl drivers without any
problems. (Some modems might require their nortek driver, which is
listed on the page as still in beta stage, but it works perfectly for
me.. no slow down in speed, etc.. ).
But, the problem is this driver still does not have a point and click
interface to start the modem.. so you might have to write a small
program to do so.. (doing it in python won't take too much time for
people who are good at it)
i suggested him to get a router which is an
additional cost of Rs99/month as rent provided by airtel.My client
relents to pay this expense and says it as an additional expense for
no matter he is not bothered what is the os or the legitamacy of the
software be.
Well, did you try telling him the legal implications of doing so. I
know of a computer shop (which belongs to a friend of mine) where
microsoft people simply bought a computer for about 29k with pirated
version of windows in it and sued him for close to 1 lakh. And this
happened right here in India in Chennai.
such solution.Some time law makers are law breakers too.The gentle man
who declines to pay Rs99/month , imagine will he buy a licensed copy
of M$windows Xp &office which mounts to Rs9000/-+
Tell him the actual cost of the product, (once you have it installed
linux, with internet configured you can probably show him the ms site
with the actual price of the software).
Most people fail to understand the concept of 'pirated' software..
give him an analogy with the "THIRUTTU VCD".
2) What are the parameters which will make my business model (i deal
only FLOSS) more renumerative in terms of volume base. I charge only
for my service and not for the software. What are the points i should
look at as a machine support guy and what are the parameter i should
talk to a pirated user for migrating him to the FLOSS community.
Try networking solutions.. (SOHO n/w), small businesses.. etc. We
have to remember that most people find computers severly
intimidating.. and throwing them into bash is not such a good idea.
Try very user friendly distro's like Madriva (mdk), Ubuntu, (My choice
would be ubutnu because broadband is almost everywhere and apt-get is
the perfect way to install software..)

A sub 10k pc is pretty much possible has been proved by HCL. Try to
offer your services to that market (The systems will be running linux,
good place to offer your services).
