The reason for having a LUG in the first place is the availability of
Free Software. Many colleges are using proprietary software at the
moment, and they pay for the licenses through their nose. Many are
Hmm.. still most of the software in our college labs are pirated.. (I
had to put up a fight to let them let me use Java instead of pirated
versions of VB, though I had to give reasons like "Java is truly
object oriented and related nonsense")
opportunity to teach better since free software comes with source
code.
Hmm.. I know that I am speaking for majority of the students of engg.
college's here when I say that 'Teach better since free software comes
with source' is an extremely fallacious argument.. because, many of
them equate the free in 'Free Software' to free beer, not free speech.
And secondly, most of them are not even interested in looking at
further references to 'clearly explain concepts', let alone go and
check out under the hood of a compiler or an Operating System.
Even, with the source, most mature Free/Open Source software (that
are usually bundled with distro's) are not very good teaching tools,
as the pack too much complexity, and simple ones are well.. too simple
to learn anything useful. The middle ground is hard to find.
