[Ilugc] Why FOSS for Education, a presentation in PDF format

1. document in pdf format which is proprietory

The presentation/document will be released under FDL soon, after making 
necessary modifications.

2. Page 4 talks abt Lower Costs. it is mentioned that Initial Cost of
acquiring FOSS is much lower. what about TCO?
3. i disagree with second paragragh on page 6. where it says that FOSS
performs better than the proprietory softwares....
If in doubt, pl. go through the statistics given by David Wheeler at

5. page 15. Linux is not the server OS. its a kernel.
In my programme, I clarify the students that, Linux is just a kernel and not 
operating system.

6. page 15. Apache is not a web server. Its a collection of projects. say it
as Apache HTTP Server Project. how do you know that it is #1 web server one
the internet?

7. page 16. MySQL's market share could never grow faster than windows.:)
please correct it. i think you want to compare with MSSQL.
Yes, the comparison was made with MS-SQL only.

8. page 62. scilab demo seems to be taken from windows vista.
Scilab and gCAD3d screenshots were taken from the project websites and not 
captured under F-7.

4. page 10 says rms started developing a free operation system called GNU
which is wrong. rms started a GNU project to create a unix-like operation
system. more over rms and linus did not plan and started the project. i
think its a grammer mistake

The above was included for an average computer student to understand that, most 
of the
FOSS developments were initially developed in an academic environment and 
nothing else.

9. for GIMP and Inkscape, QCAD, please change the title. for GIMP you could 
say Graphical Image manipulation Program, for Inkscape, Vector Drawing
Program. in first few slides, you have said that FOSS performs better than
proprietary and here you are promoting using proprietary software names. i
agree it will catch people's mind but lets tell them what it is...

The students whom I am focussing were much exposed to Proprietory software by 
their 
names.  So, it becomes necessary to have a comparison of name with the 
equivalent
proprietory softwares and I have never used/recommended the proprietory 
softwares I have mentioned
in the slide.  (My company's policy is strictly not to use proprietory software 
for any work).

11. BOSS is not a popular linux i guess...check here

BOSS was included not because of its popularity. To make aware among the 
students that, India
too has its own distribution called BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions).


12. in experts excerpt, can u please keep kalam's talk first
ok, the students pay more attention for Kalam's talk when shown in the last, 
and nothing else.

13. page 131 says "New technology developments using FOSS.". can you tell me
what are all new developments going on?
