I'm in the community because I like being part of it. I spent my time
here because I feel it is useful to the community. I look at other
people's commitment by looking at how much they are giving back to the
community. So whenever I see someone who does not play well with the
community (Novell with their patent trap and Canonical with their
non-free launchpad) I decide not to play with them (I hope there are
others in the community who share the same view). because there are
others in the community who needs my time whom I can count on to be
with the community come what may happen (Debian Social contract,
Fedora's commitment to Open Source, Utoto's commitment to Free
Software...). So I spent my time (and I have all the rights to decide
that) with those who have a demonstrated commitment to the community
and who give back.
So in this case if the FOSSConf goes the non-free way I will stop
supporting it, stop promoting it... Because there are other
conferences which respects the community and who does not treat people
like criminals who would value my time spent with them.
I am of the school of thought that freedom helps people achive
their greatest potential. That hoarding knowledge hurts people, by
restricting their freedom. That we can stand on shoulder of giants only
when the giant's shoulders are not locked up, and only released for
pay.
If a free software conference can't stop hoarding information
and creative property, then perhaps true advocated of freedom need to
start boycotting it?

I completely agree with Manoj here. I'm surprised how everyone in the
foss community thinks it is OK to be non-free when it is "my stuff".
Especially here it was not even original contribution (like
canonical), it was contributed by the community.
