the conference and hence the logo may only be used for materials

I think you need to register a trademark if you want to restrict that
way. If you can't modify the logo then it is non-free and I don't
think it is a good idea to use a non-free logo for a foss conference.
If we don't practice what we preach, then what is the point, we would
be like Canaonical people (well, foss is good and everything but we
are spending money developing launchpad, no? and foss is just for
stuff _you_ get it for free not what you develop). They have all the
legal right to do so but then what makes them different from
Microsoft? (well atleast Microsoft does not claim they are a foss
company). I think it is on topic because similar actions by other
members of the community didn't go well with the community.
Then there is also the Firefox logo trademark issue and iceweasel.
Lets not repeat the mistakes.
What is wrong if somebody wants to sell toothpaste with it?
