I think most (if not all) mail servers deliver multiple copies of mail
addressed (cc'ed) to many mail ids on the same domain. Or at least the local
MDA places multiple copies of a cc'ed mail (within the same domain) in the
different mailboxes. Are there MDAs that hold all mails (only one copy of
each) in one single place and only track the user ids that are to receive
the mails? I think Zimbra follows this approach.
About 2-3MB of attachments get mailed to all users in our company (150
users) everyday. That uses up about 300-500MB of disk space every day! Right
now it is not a critical issue because user desktops have pop3 mail clients
which download mails and remove it from the server. But what if we want to
provide only web mail access! We dont want to be storing redundant copies
then.
Are there options out there which already solve this problem (other than
Zimbra)? Or do popular MDAs support this option via a config file and only I
have missed it? Or are there other critical issues this approach will raise?
