See Cyrus Squatter. It builds indexes of your mailboxes on the server
side and any IMAP client that can perform server side search
(Thunderbird) can use it.
Squatter is very fast - full text search of ~15GB of mail takes < 10s.
The indexes typically use up 1-3% of disk space.
