As Rob says, that's where we buy in bulk, but I also supplement with food I
buy online at Duncraft.com and several other places I like. Since we also
have other (pet) birds/parrots, I buy a variety of seed.

We also have an occasional cardinal, and I buy safflower seed for them.

I have a feeder just for peanut hearts, but the squirrels in our back yard
have that one figured out.

One thing it took a while for the small birds to discover was a window bird
feeder (acrylic with three suction cups)..it was mostly to be entertainment
for our indoor cats.

However, when it got really cold, the house finches and sparrows discovered
it, and yesterday a male cardinal was also inside it. The doves are comical
as they try to get to the seed, but lose their balance and fall off in the
process.

I also keep a peanut butter feeder hanging out front when it's cold (a log
with 6 or 8 holes hollowed out) and we go through a lot of it over the
winter. It attracts all the small birds and they're on it even before I'm
back in the house.

You might call Economy Mills on Av A. They have a 50# wild bird mix for
about $15-16. They have 50# chopped corn for about $10. Corn not the best
diet, but is calories and most yard food goes to House Sparrows and doves.
Despite the rhetoric, corn is not "bad"; just not the "best". If you feed
it, they will come.

hahaha, we too have large numbers of birds at the feeders, including a
beautiful Cardinal this morning.

We go through 4 each 40 pounds bags of bird seed each month, though the
birds would eat more!! We get it at Gebo's at $14.99 per bag.

Any info on a better priced source would be good.

My wife corrected me as the junco's returned today - they are Oregon junco's
- male's have obvious black cape. Counted six in the group and fun to watch
and learn their behavior compared to the house sparrow. I'm assuming I'm
the rare house feeding in the snow as all the neighborhood birds seem to be
hanging out on my patio today. First time to see the local cardinal family
and a couple of mourning doves. Also had never seen doves as a group chase
grackles away. The mockingbird comes and tries to play king-of-the-hill and
chase everyone away, but that doesn't last long. More than the usual number
of finches on the thistle feeder.
