Seems to me that the case for 720p is obvious enough, anytime you have any reason to want to share the channel with other content. The reason for 1080i is passed. HD cameras now provide progressive output, so why bother transmitting 1080i?

Simple.

To amortize the investment the networks and stations have made in the format. Just as they continue to deliver most of the broadcast day in SDTV.
