A pedantic aside:

DSL was meant for use with Basic Rate ISDN. It is a 144 Kb/s link.

ADSL was meant for service beyond ISDN, is more distance-limited than DSL, and
limited to 6.1 Mb/s down.

VDSL is even more distance-limited than ADSL, "fiber to the curb" for the
fastest rates, and in principle capable of almost 52 Mb/s down.

As a matter of fact, Verizon (at least) DOES NOT intend to compete its xDSL
against FiOS. That was my point. Verizon stopped improving ADSL when it reached
1.54 Mb/s down. Now they offer the faster rates only on their FiOS, in places
where FiOS has been installed. I think 20 Mb/s down for Internet access, which
matches Cox.

I have FiOS and I have Cox as my two options for faster than ADSL rates. Both
are partially walled gardens. Verizon sees much better returns if they can
convince people to go to FiOS, because that will encourage these people to then
go ahead and buy into their walled garden TV and telephone service.

Did I say or imply that this walled garden concept is a better idea, ever? I'm
just telling it like it is, Kon. You want to get broadband out there fast, you
can't get overly zealous about "net neutrality."
