Or watching TV on a smartphone or on a PC?
I explained this. You are being redundant.
If you "explained this," then why claim that these middle boxes were always
required? Why not go back and erase the comment?
So indeed, these schemes, JUST LIKE TVE, have the aim of keeping
the faithful into the monthly rental fees and the MVPD subscription
fees.
Obviously. I explained this too.
If you "explained this too," then why did you claim that this scheme was
"nothing like" TVE? Both are hail maries, with the same goal in mind: keep them
faithful, walled in, renting boxes, even while they use IP which doesn't need
the boxes (or the proprietary non-neutral infrastructure). Why not erase the
comment, then, if you had figured this out?
Adding OTT capabilities to a MVPD STB is primarily an ease-of-use,
So say glossy sales brochures. Of course, this would be the sales pitch.
But we do know that the vast majority of homes want both because
they are paying for both.
You know nothing of the sort. Subscriptions have dropped from perhaps 90+% ca.
2012 to 68% (most recent number we have seen). Could it be that 18% of US
households are on the verge of taking this "scary plunge"? That would reduce
your supposedly perfectly satisfied households to 50%. I'm questioning your
assertion about "the vast majority of households," Craig. Most households
currently use both legacy and IP, yes. It's a leap to claim they WANT to, and
I'd even say, keeping in mind the trend line, 68% might not constitute such a
"vast majority" right about now.
It is easy to argue that were Univision and CW *also* available
on this proprietary rental box, then those who use the
proprietary rental box would for sure be paying retrans consent
fees to those two channels. Right? ... Contractual rights or not,
it seems on the face of it like another example of "too much
greed for their own good."
Or maybe just the reality that existing contracts prevent
Like these contracts were supernaturally chiseled in stone, so they cannot be
changed, even if it is the best interest of the content owners to change them?
Like I said, the formula answer doesn't explain anything. To the extent anyone
even gives a hoot about "live" shows for this type of material, it certainly
seems counterintuitive that content owners would even hesitate in trying to
keep the faithful walled in. If a minority want "live" Univision or CW shows,
but on their IP appliances, and Suddenlink can keep these pacified while still
walled in safely, what could be the objection?
My only thought is, the local OTA broadcasters would become irrelevant, so
*they* objected, even if they would still be paid retrans consent. There was no
indication that the "live" streams would come from local broadcasters, as they
do in CBS All Access. Nothing else make a lot of sense.
