Actually, I can think of two broadcasters in Anchorage Alaska (one is my
customer, KYES-DT) that use 704x480 video. KYES-DT has two 704x480 streams.
At one time, they had three, until I bitched about 4:3 video in a 16:9
frame.
I have no connection to the other broadcaster; I couldn't even name the
chief engineer. I can provide screen captures from TS_reader with the
particulars, if you wish.
Also, at least one broadcaster in Los Angeles (KXLA, I think) offered, the
last time I checked, at least one 704x480 stream.
In San Diego, KUSI-DT offers a badly-stretched 4:3 picture in 704x480.
So, I have problems with your predicate. The three markets that I know of
all provide 704x480 video. If you had said "no broadcaster in the Lansing,
Michigan market uses 704x480", I wouldn't be able to dispute that. But
currently -- at this very moment -- I know of three broadcasters that use
704x480 video.
At KYES-DT, we've also tried 720x480, but that breaks a few receivers, and
my customer is concerned about that. (We've done much testing in this
area.)
I read the entire post, John. It was incorrect, and your caveat didn't
work.
John Willkie, who tries (or tends to think he tries) to avoid
all-encompassing statements when he only has a few data points.
P.S. And, I'm assuming that "practical use" means more than 0 broadcasters
use it.

Please re-read what I wrote.
704x480i in 16:9 is a valid ATSC format (yes I know table 3 was not adopted
by the FCC) but it is not currently used by a single broadcaster in the
United States. I said it would never be used. I said that perhaps 480p
16:9 would be used, but 480p is ED, not SD.
I said that the only 16:9 native format IN PRACTICAL USE will be HD content.
That includes 720p60, 1080i30, 1080p24, and 1080p30. For cable, that could
also include 1080p60 using advanced codecs.
Thank you for reading the entire post, not just what jumps out at you as
wrong.
