In my opinion, I don't see the STB going away. There are just too many
reasons why a separate box would be needed:
- Disruptive technologies; someone will always be redefining the state of
technology.
- Impossibility to develop an architecture that every CE manufacture, MVPD
and distributor could work to.
- DRM, storage, account management and other "control" issues.
- Life cycle of a display screen versus the various components to get it
to the display: reception, codecs, hardware processing, etc.
- People.
I am not sure IP could answer all of these issues. Ironically, IP does
answer many of these, but it is individuals (i.e., individuals in
companies) that fear IP delivery that prevents the solution.
