I think the point of that article is that delivery of TV is going IP regardless, and that pretty much guarantees that STBs will have to go.

If TV material is just more online content, to be consumed by any number of Internet appliances, then surely no one would suggest that an STB should be required. You wouldn't want to attach an STB to your tablet or smartphone, for example, to watch TV. Any more than you'd put up with proprietary STBs on your PC, one for going to your bank site, one for lawn care, one for your favorite news site, etc. etc. The idea that TV content is different is an idea that even the content owners themselves are going to have to disabuse themselves of.

If all of these Internet appliances we use can do without stand-alone STBs, then why should the "large screen Internet appliance" (aka TV set) mandate their use? Or as a corollary, unless the TV networks have a death wish, if they want multiple (hand held) screens to be usable for TV, they will be forced to accept an IP and STB-free mechanism for delivery.

It's funny to me that it took the Internet to force people to act in the interest of the consumer once again. TV was this way too, of course, until MVPDs emerged on the scene, ca. 1980. All was standardized before then, even if the technology of the day made upgradeability problematic (although certainly NOT impossible). Now the Internet forced a reset to sanity, and it seems to me inevitable that it is dragging TV along too, even if kicking and screaming.
