MVPDs use STBs to protect their service and generate recurring revenue streams. 
Efforts to build cable card and other features into TV sets have been a huge 
failure; another example of how an oligopoly can use its power to resist change.

MVPDs have NOTHING to do with Smart TVs and "smart dongles" like the Roku box 
or Apple TV. 

Feel free to remind us that these boxes are an evil tool of companies who want 
to replace the MVPD walled gardens with their own…
